On the other hand
This time of the year in Israel is usually a roller coaster of emotions.
Yom Hashoah brings the country to a halt as the sirens blare forth, and we honour the memory of all those who were murdered by the Germans and their collaborators.
A week later, the sirens wail again on Yom Hazikaron as we remember and pay tribute to the men and women who fought and died to defend Israel and also the victims of terror.
The next day (in fact, the night before) the mood shifts dramatically as Yom Ha’Atzmaut is celebrated, and the air is filled with sounds of joy and the aroma of barbecues.
This two-week period perfectly epitomises the Jewish experience over the millennia as mourning following disasters and celebrations over deliverances alternated one after the other.
