On Seder night we remember the plagues which afflicted the Egyptians until Pharaoh let the Hebrews go. In the Promised Land today we marvel at the amazing miracles which a liberated nation is providing for the benefit of humanity.
IT’S A GOAL!!!
Israel has purchased the rights to broadcast one of the most popular international sporting events, the FIFA World Cup, to large swaths of the Arab world. The broadcast will be available for free for residents of neighboring Arab countries.
Israel’s World Cup broadcasts will reach Arab-speaking football fans in Judea and Samaria, Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan. With teams competing from countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, Israel’s broadcasts could draw massive audiences.
When Qatar broadcast the World Cup it charged each family viewing the event about $45. Israel’s broadcast will be free.
Conspiracy theorists in the Arab/Islamic world have already tweeted wild accusations but others have expressed immense excitement at the prospect of viewing the games.
SCENT AND SMELL
Your smartphone may soon be able to identify and analyse scent as easily as it scans a QR code or recognises a voice. A Haifa-based company, Nanoscent, has developed an electronic nose that can detect odors and flavors through a smartphone. As an extra bonus, the technology might also help jump-start your love life, the company says.
Nanoscent is developing a smartphone app that, used together with a chip called a “scent recorder,” can determine users’ scent profile and help them select products, e.g., cosmetics, perfumes and soaps, best suited for them. Made up of nanoparticles, the sensor emits different signals based on the smell it is exposed to. Nanoscent’s technology uses the interactions between the sensor and the chemical substances emitted from our body to generate a distinct pattern, or fingerprint, for each scent. It then uses this data to train its algorithm to identify different kinds of smells.
Once developed, the technology would possibly be the first that would allow smartphones to have the sense of smell.
SUPER FAST CHIPS
Following three years of extensive research, Hebrew University of Jerusalem researchers have created technology that will enable our computers—and all optic communication devices—to run 100 times faster through terahertz microchips.
Optic communications encompass all technologies that use light and transmit through fiber optic cables, such as the internet, email, text messages, phone calls, the cloud and data centers, among others. Optic communications are super fast but in microchips they become unreliable and difficult to replicate in large quantities.
Now, by using a Metal-Oxide-Nitride-Oxide-Silicon (MONOS) structure, the researchers have come up with a new integrated circuit that uses flash memory technology—the kind used in flash drives and discs-on-key—in microchips. If successful, this technology will enable standard 8-16 gigahertz computers to run 100 times faster and will bring all optic devices closer to the holy grail of communications: the terahertz chip.

The world is facing a growing water crisis as at least half of the global population of 7.6 billion is expected to be living in water-stressed areas by 2025. As of 2017, over two billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water.
