IT’S ALL IN YOUR HANDWRITING
Feeling angry, happy, or irritated? A new study at the University of Haifa has found that our handwriting reveals our mood. An ability to identify the subject’s emotions easily and non-invasively could lead to a breakthrough in research and in emotional therapy.
The study included 62 participants, who were divided randomly into three groups. Each group underwent an activity that put the participants in a different mood – positive, negative, and neutral, by viewing appropriate movies. Each group of participants was then asked to write a paragraph on the computerized system including all the letters in the Hebrew alphabet.
The study revealed differences between the three groups in various parameters relating to handwriting. In other words, the participants in each group were in a different mood, and the differences can be gauged empirically.
The findings of the study may help therapists identify their patient’s actual mood, something that naturally is very significant for the therapeutic process.
KIBBUTZIM BECOMING HIGH-TECH HUBS
Israel’s collective communities, or kibbutzim, were first established as agricultural projects but have changed significantly over their 100-year history, showing an astute capability to adapt to a dynamic economic environment. Many of them successfully weathered the Israeli economic crisis of the 1980s to develop a solid industrial sector, which as of 2016 accounted for about three-quarters of kibbutz income, while others turned to technology and products, developing profitable businesses. Others still went down the path of sustainable living,
Now, the kibbutzim, particularly those in southern Israel, are increasingly looking to high-tech and innovation. This is another example of Israeli pioneering innovation and the spirit which drives this country to be a world leader in many fields.
ONLINE SHOPPING CHAMPIONS
Israel was the world’s second-largest online commerce consumer per capita in 2017 — second only to China — according to e-commerce giant eBay.
Israelis bought products on eBay every two seconds and sold items every three seconds on average in 2017, the company said.
Israelis bought 17 million items via eBay in 2017 — a 6 percent increase from the previous year — totaling $425 billion. The average purchase cost was $25.
Israelis sold more than 10 million items over the course of the year — a daily average of 30,000 items — a 50 percent increase from 2016. Some 47,000 new buyers from Israel used eBay in 2017.
Israelis purchased about 700,000 vehicle parts through the company last year. They also bought 633 cars, yachts, and motorcycles, including a large number of luxury or antique vehicles: 52 Chevrolet Corvettes and 32 Ford Mustangs alone.
In addition, Israelis bought 750,000 sports items, 70,000 pairs of running shoes, and 180,000 bicycles. They also spent over $1 million in virtual reality equipment, drones, and speakers.
Some 35,000 Israelis sold items through eBay in 2017, with 8,500 of the sellers earning a living by doing so. Israelis sold two million items for the home and garden, one million beauty and health care items, hundreds of thousands of jewelry items and watches, and 50,000 anti-aging products.
