On Saturday morning, as the news made headlines worldwide, members of Perth’s Community Security Group advised Perth Hebrew Congregation’s Rabbi Daniel Lieberman as he was walking to shul that he was going to have an unexpected guest for the Shabbat service.

Anthony Albanese sat in the front row of the synagogue and participated in the bar mitzvah custom of throwing lollies.

He addressed the congregations, admitting this was the first ever Barmitzvah he had attended and offering congratulations and wishes to the boy and his family.

Anthony Albanese denounced Friday’s attack in Melbourne calling it “abhorrent”, “unacceptable”, and “unAustralian”. He also declared it a terrorist attack.

During a press conference in Canberra today, the prime minister mentioned his shul visit in Perth saying, “I attended the Bar Mitzvah of a young boy there and I was very much welcomed there.”

Anthony Albanese told the media conference that he had spoken with the president of Adass on Friday morning.

Who cares? Stop the antisemitism and vilification of Israel.
