Olympic canoe star Fox continues Australian dominance
Olympic gold medallist Jessica Fox wasn’t prepared to be upstaged by her little sister Noemi, storming to victory in the final of canoe event at the Australian championships.
The eight-time world champion qualified third best into the final round at Penrith’s whitewater stadium behind her sister and American young gun Evy Leibfarth.
But Jessica, who won gold at the Tokyo Games in the C1 which was her fourth Olympic medal, was determined to maintain her hold on the event and crossed the line in a time of 104.84 seconds to secure the gold medal.
Leibfarth was second in 111.53 while Noemi, who had two penalties, clocked 119.91 to just miss the podium.
“I was really happy with that run – it was finally the run where everything feels flowing and you’re powerful and strong and online and attacking it so I was really pleased to put that run down,” 28-year-old Fox said.
“Especially after yesterday where it didn’t quite feel like I was racing to my potential in the kayak so it was a nice run.”
Fox finished third in the kayak event which was won by France’s Camille Prigent, but backed up her C1 victory with a win in the new Olympic event of kayak cross.
“The kayak cross is an extra event on the program and it’s definitely beefed up my training load and my racing load at the World Cup races especially where it’s got to fit in those three days,” said Fox, who is reigning world champion in the event.
