News site “10 daily” has published a story highlighting a chain email blaming “white Aussies” for the problems emanating from an apartment building in Mascot experiencing serious cracks and instability.

All residents were evacuated.

10 news reports the email blames “white inspectors” who “ignore defect unintentionally’.

The news source report on its website that they have seen several emails with messages containing “From now on, we must change all inspectors to people belong to Indian heritage! This diversity will make everyone vigilant and we will have better quality towers only! We definitely can’t use Jewish, because Jewish developers produce dodgy towers only.”

NSW Jewish Board of Deputies president Lesli Berger commented: “The comments are scurrilous and should be dismissed with the contempt they deserve. Giving them air time serves only to encourage those who indulge in such racism.”

I find Lesli Berger’s comments quite astounding. I really cannot see how this coverage by 10 daily is any different to the frequent media stories about other eruptions of antisemitism, racism or discrimination in our society. I dare say the commendable work of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission, and other Jewish-led organisations would be the poorer if the media did not give airtime to this evil in our midst.
