It is an honour and a pleasure to wish the Jewish community of NSW a Chag Pesach Sameach.

Chris Minns

For thousands of years, Jews across the globe have gathered around the seder table each Passover and retold the story of the Exodus from Egypt. In an unbroken chain, grandparents and parents have told the next generation about Jewish enslavement under the ruthless tyranny of Pharaoh—and their subsequent liberation.

There really is something special about the celebration of the Jewish people’s survival that happens on Pesach. My Jewish friends speak of that unmistakable atmosphere on seder night as families come together, tell the Passover story, endure eating maror and savour the charoset and the Hillel sandwich, share four cups of wine, open the door for Elijah, and so many other wonderful traditions.

As the NSW Jewish community participates in this millennia-old tradition this week, I know that you will reflect on the Jewish people’s history of persecution throughout the ages. As you will read in the Haggadah on seder night, “in every generation they stand against us to destroy us,” but God “rescues us from their hand.”

With this in mind, I would like to assure the Jewish community that my Government is committed to addressing the growth in antisemitism. My team led the push for legislation banning Nazi symbols in NSW, and we have committed to providing millions of dollars to improve the security of places of worship of people and religious buildings.

On behalf of the NSW Government, I wish you a happy and healthy Passover.

Chag Sameach!
