NSW Maccabi president Lauren Ehrlich has congratulated those honorees who gained NSW Jewish Sports Awards for 2019.
She said: “Whilst we are encountering unusual and challenging times with COVID-19, we are fortunate still to be able to recognise the outstanding achievements of members within our community online”.

Louis Platus OAM Trophy – Club Administrator of the Year
Howard Silver – Tenpin
Howard is a long-serving Club President and leads an active committee. His Tenpin club competes in a weekly internal comp each Monday night. The Club also runs numerous competition events throughout the year. The club has seen a 25% increase in active members over the last 12 months.
Maccabi NSW Leadership Award
Adam Karras – Touch Football
Adam has a long affiliation with Maccabi, including playing Rugby with Maccabi and competing at the 2017 Maccabiah.
In 2019, Adam took control of the Mixed Social Touch Footy competition, helping to revive player numbers & run the Winter & Summer competitions.
Adam also joined the Maccabi NSW board and took on the challenge of reviving a national mixed sports competition for young adults. Planning was underway when COVID-19 changed everyone’s plans, but Adam maintains this event will run and there is great interest in the event given it has been many years since Senior Carnival last ran.
Australian Jewish News Award – Club of the Year
Golf Club
The Maccabi Golf Club has an engaged & active leadership committee that meets regularly. Over the last 2 years, club membership has been revived to over 150 members. The club offers a full suite of events throughout year, including national & interstate events.
The revived Women’s Golf activities offer stand-alone tournaments (local & interstate) and as a result, women’s membership has increased significantly.
The club has engaged a younger adult demographic and has attracted sponsors & increased club revenue. Maccabi Golf had strong representation at Maccabiah 2017 and plans even more at the next Maccabiah Games.
The York Family Award – Team of the Year
Hakoah Youth Boys U16
The U16 Hakoah Team competed in the NPL1 (state league) Premiership.
They won their regular season Minor Premiership – a significant achievement and the first time the club has achieved this, however, were knocked out in the week 1 of the finals.
