Sydney’s North Shore Temple Emanuel (NSTE) has welcomed Cantor Ted Labow to the congregation as Interim Cantor for the next six months.

Cantor Ted

Cantor Ted is providing cantorial and musical support during Shabbat and festival services, as well as other congregational and life cycle events. He is assisting with pastoral care and supporting NSTE’s education programs, including the Meah Hebrew and Religion School, B’nei Mitzvah program, programs for teens and young adults, young family programs, adult education, and onsite Apples and Honey Preschool.

North Shore Temple Emanuel’s Senior Rabbi Nicole Roberts says “I am so excited to welcome Cantor Ted on board during this period. He has a great diversity of talents and interests, a wealth of experience, and a keen desire to engage in many aspects of congregational life that we value here at NSTE.”

Originally from Canada, Cantor Ted comes to NSTE from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He is an accomplished dramatic baritone singer and musician, singing in several languages including Hebrew, Russian, French, German and Italian, and plays piano, guitar, oud and cello. He is a composer of Jewish music, writing for solo voice, choir and instruments.

Cantor Ted’s work experience spans across Toronto, Canada, Singapore, Iowa and New Jersey and includes the many areas with  which he is engaged at NSTE. He is also an accomplished Hebrew Calligrapher and Designer, making fine hand-painted Ketubot and Judaic artwork.

Cantor Ted will take part in  NSTE’s upcoming  ‘Musical Mélange at VJs’ on Sunday 18 February at 7pm – an entertaining evening of choirs, soloists and instrumentalists in jazz and show songs. All are welcome.

Music Director, Judy Campbell, says “I’ve had the pleasure of singing with Cantor Ted at music conventions in Israel and the USA, and am thrilled to work with him at NSTE. The February concert will showcase another of his many talents, that of an accomplished jazz pianist.”

Tickets for the ‘Musical Mélange at VJs’ event can be purchased via https://nste.org.au/musicalmelange
