Nomination for Geoff
Melbourne Maccabi stalwart Associate Professor Geoff Sussman has been nominated for the Senior Australian of the Year.
Geoffrey Sussman is a modern-day renaissance man. At 82 years old, he actively contributes to his profession, local community and faith, the arts and sporting worlds, and the wider Victorian and Australian communities.
Geoffrey’s international career in wound management has spanned almost 60 years. He is a pioneer, educator, researcher, clinician and author in the field. Widely acknowledged as the leading authority in Australia in wound management, he has even extended his skills to animal patients in the Melbourne Zoo.
Geoffrey has participated fully in life outside his chosen profession. He has a long, active career in amateur and professional theatre and in TV as a writer, director and performer. Until recently, Geoffrey was cantor in his local synagogue and taught at a religious school. He has made a significant contribution to the sporting world as a sports administrator at the grassroots level and as an Olympian.
Geoffrey has also bred, shown and judged pedigree dogs.
Geoff told J-Wire: “I am very proud to be considered as one of the four people nominated as Senior Australian of the year if I am successful it will give me a unique opportunity to promote the issue of chronic wounds the area I have spent the major part of my professional life.
Geoff Sussman has served the Jewish sport and the wider community with distinction for over 30 years including Ajax Swimming Club, Vice President Australian Maccabi Federation, Chairman of the Victorian Maccabi Council, a Team and Section Manager of Swimming Teams at Carnivals and three Maccabi Games, two as part of senior team management.
His involvement includes Gymnastics, Swimming and Diving as president of Gymnastics Victoria from1987 -2006. Chairman Australian Diving 10 years elite team manager Australian diving team for 4 years including the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992. He was chairman of the Gymnastics Foundation from 2008 to 2016.
A member of Sports Medicine Australia its spokesman for SMA on drugs in sport and teaches level sports trainers. He was a member of the Doping Advisory Control Panel for Swimming Australia from 1988 to 2005. He was a delegate the Victorian Olympic Council and the Victorian Commonwealth Games Association, He served for four years as an executive board member of the Victorian Olympic Council
