Al Yazbek, the restaurateur behind the upscale Nomad restaurant in Surry Hills, Sydney is reportedly facing criticism from his Jewish landlords, Robert and Geula Burke, following charges related to the alleged display of a Nazi symbol at a pro-Palestine rally.

The Burkes, prominent Sydney real estate investors, own the building where Nomad is located through their company Hanave Pty Ltd. Sources within the Jewish community indicate that the couple is distressed by the alleged conduct of their tenant.

The Australian reports that Yazbek, who was charged by NSW Police with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public, allegedly held a sign at a recent rally featuring a swastika superimposed on the Israeli flag, with the words “Stop Nazi Israel.” The incident has sparked a strong reaction, with patrons threatening boycotts and at least five major corporations cancelling events planned at Yazbek’s Melbourne restaurant, Reine & La Rue. French champagne producer G.H. Mumm has also announced it is reconsidering its partnership with the venue for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Enza Soto, Nomad’s head pastry chef, told the Herald Sun she was “lost for words” over the allegations, given the presence of co-head chef Rotem Papo, who is Israeli-born. According to The Australian, at least one senior chef at Nomad has resigned following the charges.

The Burkes have a long history of disputes with Yazbek, including a 2019 legal battle over fire damage repairs at the Nomad location. The case ended earlier this year with a ruling in favour of Yazbek, requiring the Burkes to cover legal costs. The couple also owned a Surry Hills property destroyed by fire last year, which was slated for redevelopment into a luxury hotel.

Yazbek, in a statement to The Daily Telegraph, expressed his sorrow for the ongoing conflict. He is scheduled to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on October 24.
