Nobel prize winner to visit Australia
Technion-based Professor Danny Shechtman was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2011 in chemistry.
The prize was awarded for his discovery of the Icosahedral Phase of crystal formation which opened the new science of quasiperiodic crystals (today 500,000 references in Google).
He achieved this in 2011 while while at the John Hopkins University in Baltimore in the mid eighties. He has received too many honors too name in total but was awarded the Israel Prize in physics in 1998.
His is a fascinating story of scientific integrity triumphing over adversity. Professor Shechter was for many years pilloried and labelled a charlatan by world leaders in his field. He knew he was right. A true father of theStart Up Nation he has taught since 1986 a Technological Entrepreneurship class at the Technion in Haifa attended by hundreds of students every year. Over 10,000 engineers and scientists have used the insights gained in this course to patent their IP and start their own companies.
He will visit Melbourne later this month where he will be a visiting professor at Monash University before travelling to Sydney.
Maybe a meeting with Jake Lynch at Sydney Uni could be arranged?
I am surprised that Bob Carr and his mob granted him a visa – was there no lobbying from Hamas sympatisers, the University of Sydney and the Greens against welcoming Technion-based Professor Danny Shechtman in Australia?
