Recently, a VAJEX delegation including president Ben Hirsh, visited Hayat at his Caulfield home to personally welcome the new organisation’s newest and oldest member.

Joseph Hayat was 31 years old in 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army and was posted to the 16th Bn Volunteer Defence Corps. He had been living in Shepparton at the time where he worked as an orchardist.

Judy Landau, Vice-President of VAJEX, told J-Wire: “it is a wonderful story and he’s a lovely gentleman.”
