New military exhibition at the Jewish Museum
The Sydney Jewish Museum will launch a new permanent exhibition later this month highlighting Jewish involvement in the Australian Defence Forces.
The exhibition, Jewish Involvement in Australian Military History 1788-2010, will be opened by the former Chief of the Defence Force General Peter Cosgrove on October 19.
Featuring well-known identities including Sir John Monash of Gallipoli fame and Greg Sher who lost his life recently in Afghanistan, the exhibition will tell the stories of Jewish men and women who fought or supported the Australian Defence Forces since their inception.
Stories from the Boer War to the present day will be told graphically and in detail including Leonard Keysor’s. He won a Victoria Cross in World War I for catching incoming bombs and throwing them back at the enemy.
More than 150 stories will be featured including those of Rose Shappere, Eric Hyman, Asher Joel, Dr Abraham Fryberg, Dr Stanly Goulston, Peter Isaacson, Lt Frank Slutzkin and Stella Cornelius.
