Mayor Jamie Hyams

The 43-yr-old senior policy analyst for The Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council is one of eight Independents on the nine member Council. The ninth s a member of the Greens Party. Cr Hyams told J-Wire: “The Victorian Greens did not adopt the BDS policies of their NSW counterparts so there is no anti-Israel sentiment within the Council.”

Four of the eight Independents are Jewish. Apart from Jamie Hyams, who was Deputy Mayor before rising to the top position this week, the others are Michael Lipshutz, STeven Tang and outgoing mayor  Margaret Esakoff.

Hyams told J-Wire: “Highlight of the year to come for me will be the opening of the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre, built with the aid of State and Federal Government grants.”

Hyams has been a local councillor for six years and served as deputy mayor this year. He will serve his 12-month stint as mayor in a full time capacity.

Suburbs within the Municipality of Glen Eira include Caulfield, Elsternwick, Carnegie and Bentleigh.

When he is not analysing and carrying out council duties, Jamie Hyams enjoys playing cricket for Maccabi AJAX.
