New face in U.K. Parliament
Julian Huppert has been elected the Liberal Democrat member for Cambridge in the new U.K. parliament.
The 31-yr-old new member holds a PhD in bioligical chemistry and is the son of Sydneysiders Herbert and Felicia Huppert.
Born in Pasadena, California, where his parents were on sabbatical leave, Huppert has been a regular visitor to Sydney.
In 1991, the Hupperts spent their sabbatical year in Sydney during which Julian was a student at the Emanuel School and celebrated his Barmitzvah at Emanuel Synagogue.
The family returned to Sydney for a further year’s sabbatical in 1995. Julian Huppert spent the year at Sydney Grammar school and represented Australia at the Science Olympics in Beijing, winning the Silver Medal for Chemistry.
Politics is not a new arena for Huppert. He has spent eight years as a County Councillor and chaired the Cambridge Traffic Management Committee.
An accomplished percussionist, Huppert performs regularly and numbers the Sydney Opera House among the many venues at which he has appeared.
His main field of endeavour is DNA and the political scientist in the true meaning of the phrase is currently working in the development of anti-cancer drugs.
Julian Huppert holds both U.K and Australian nationalities.
