Robert Goot, deputy president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, has been invited to serve on the Claims Conference’s Ad Hoc Committee on Education Allocation Priorities.
The Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (Claims Conference) is a nonprofit organization with offices in New York, Israel and Germany that secures material compensation for Holocaust survivors around the world.
Founded in 1951 by representatives of 23 major international Jewish organizations, the Claims Conference negotiates for and disburses funds to individuals and organizations and seeks the return of Jewish property stolen during the Holocaust.
Since 1952, the German government has paid approximately $90 billion in indemnification to individuals for suffering and losses resulting from persecution by the Nazis.
Goot is a long-standing board member and member of the Leadership Council of the Claims Conference.
The ad hoc committee, which includes Claims Conference Board members and experts in the field, will examine whether, in the new reality following October 7, the significant upsurge in antisemitism and troubling societal trends, the Claims Conference’s priorities for allocating funding for education programs throughout the world should be expanded or adjusted over the long term.
Robert Goot has been involved in various capacities with the Conference for over 17 years. He said: “It is an honour and a privilege to serve on this important committee at one of the most challenging times the international Jewish community has faced, and when education to combat antisemitism is so critically
In 2024, the Claims Conference will distribute approximately $535 million in direct compensation to over 115,000 survivors in 84 countries and will allocate approximately $888 million in grants to over 300 social service agencies worldwide that provide vital services for Holocaust survivors, such as home care, food and medicine.
