Melbourne-born Toby Glaser has been appointed as cantor at Sydney’s North Shore Temple Emanuel.

Cantor Toby Glaser

Cantor Glaser completed his cantorial studies and ordination at Hebrew Union College and the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music, attaining a Masters of Jewish Sacred Music.

He also has a Bachelor of Arts in Music History and German Studies and a Diploma of French Studies from the University of Melbourne.

Cantor Glaser is currently serving Rodef Shalom Congregation, Pittsburgh, USA.

Senior Rabbi Nicole Roberts said: “I’m so excited that Cantor Toby has decided to return to Australia and join our Temple family.

He brings so many strengths and talents, while embodying the warmth, care, and personability that remain so important in our clergy team. He will help bring much uplift and inspiration in these difficult times. As we begin our 65th anniversary year in 2025, it is a blessing to have so much to look forward to.”

NSTE Co-President Josh Keller added, “Cantor Toby brings with him an amazing repertoire of musical styles that feel like he’s singing directly to the heart. ”

Cantor Glaser will work closely with Senior Rabbi Nicole Roberts and as Choir Director working with the NSTE Choir.

He said: “ My father grew up in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and I still have the majority of my extended family there. Sydney has always had a special place in my heart and I am thrilled to return to home soil after ten years, first in Jerusalem and New York for studies, and then Pittsburgh and San Francisco in my first cantorial positions.”

He will take up his new position on July 1.
