This is the fourth time Israel has won the contest and the first time since 1998 with Israel automatically hosting the 2019 competition.

The president of The Executive Council of Australian Jewry Anton Block told J-Wire: “Netta Barzilai’s victory in the Eurovision final is a wonderful achievement that will make Israelis swell with pride, providing a welcome distraction from events on the southern and northern fronts. Netta is a symbol of everything that is good about Israel.

She is bold, outspoken, progressive and fabulous. Best of all, her victory ensures that Eurovision 2019 is coming to Israel!”

Netta tweeted “Thank you Europe”

Australia came 20th and it appears the “Aussies from down under” novelty had worn off.

Netta’s novelty act won convincingly but it reminds me of Finland a few years ago with its novelty act Lordie, with the masks and heavy metal sound and more recently Austria with the she/him singwr also did well to win.

The voting audience are looking for something different. Traditional pop music may not be the way to go in future for Australia.
