The Israel Forever Foundation has launched My Herzl International Essay Competition to inspire critical thinking and engagement with Zionism and its relevance today among young Jews.

The competition is open to 13-17 year-old Jewish students from across the globe.

Zionism is a misunderstood and contentious topic that dominates headlines and debates. In an effort to revitalize the understanding and relevance of the leadership and action that shaped the movement of political Zionism under Theodor Herzl, The Israel Forever Foundation has launched the My Herzl International Youth Essay Competition.

Showcasing the relevance of Herzl as a visionary Jewish leader in modern times, participants in the competition are encouraged to explore a range of topics that examine the connection between the past, present and future in a unique way.

Established in partnership with David Matlow, the world’s foremost collector of Herzl memorabilia, the My Herzl initiative exposes the young generation to the values and vision of leadership and activism that enabled the reestablishment of Jewish sovereignty in their ancestral homeland of Israel. Matlow shares, “It is our turn to explore the visions of the next generation. To hear the ideas that you believe will shape the future of the Jewish people at this important time in history. With hate against Jews rising again and the purpose of Israel being questioned, we can all gain inspiration from the leaders of our past. The opportunity to address challenges with wisdom, determination and resolve now rests on our shoulders.” It is up to all of us to complete Herzl’s dream.

To connect with the younger generation, educators and community leaders are the crucial element to reaching today’s youth and inspiring them to consider fundamental issues that touch on the nerve of Jewish peoplehood, patriotism, and the endless struggle for Jewish rights. Israel Forever is working with a growing number of schools, organizations and communities across the Jewish world.

An esteemed panel of judges will determine which young winner will be invited to present their essay in Jerusalem, in conjunction with the upcoming World Zionist Congress in 2020. This innovative essay competition is an active learning initiative that can spark a renewed understanding, respect and pride in the modern implications of the historical legacy that affirms Jewish rights today and for the future.

  • The winning ideas will be reviewed by an exclusive panel of judges.
  • Monetary prizes will be awarded for outstanding essays.
  • Winner and one companion will win 2 tickets to Israel to present their essays to the delegates of the World Zionist Congress 2020.
  • Presentation training will be provided before delivering essay live on stage.
  • Winning essays will be shared across Israel Forever and partnering organization media channels.
  • Every applicant will receive a certificate of participation.
