The chairman of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils has openly stood by his comparison of the recent Gaza incursion to the Holocaust.

Speaking after the inter-faith conference in Brisbane’s City Hall at which he had been seated next to Jeremy Jones yesterday, Ikebal Patel said: “I’m talking about the style of suffering. I’m not talking about  a crazy despot like Hitler doing what he did.” Jones was representing the Executive Council of Australian Jewry.

In a report in the Brisbane Times,  Mr Patel is said to have conceded that he had “probably underestimated the sensitivity of the word ‘Holocaust.'” He stood by his analogy that “victims of the Holocaust [are] now perpetrating much worse atrocities against the Palestinians.”

Robert Goot, President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, is attempting to resolve the issue.
