Moriah in Jerusalem
A very exciting Moriah College reunion has taken place in Jerusalem’s Beth Shmuel Theatre.
The Yedid-Alumni Association organised a Reunion, bringing together Moriah College Alumni who now live in Israel. The event was attended by close to 200 old collegians and staff members; and members of the Moriah family including former College Principal Lionel Link, and Joan Fisher – wife of the late Sam Fisher who was a Moriah Life Patron and instrumental in the establishment of the College in its early days.
The 2014 Tour Band and Orchestra played a concert at the event with accompanying parents, Israeli family members and friends of the group swelling the audience to more than 400 people! Lionel Link and Joan Fisher (and formerly, Sam) along with many other Moriah stalwarts living in Israel, never miss an opportunity to see the Moriah students when they are playing in Jerusalem! The students were rewarded with sustained standing ovations by an incredibly appreciative audience who were captivated by the group’s talent, and professional level of performance. Welcome home to the Tour Band/Orchestra, who arrived back in Sydney this morning.
The touring musicians, under the direction of Moriah’s Musical Director Roberta Goot, played to thousands of enthusiastic audiences at 16 concerts in 20 days in the USA and Israel, including at Disneyland, the Danny Kaye Theatre in New York, the Wix Theatre at the Weizman Institute and with the Orchestra of the IDF.
The concert programs have included music of a wide variety of genres from classical to pop and have featured a Jewish musical interpretation of Waltzing Matilda, as well as Yiddish and Israeli standards.
The group has an online blog where you can see photos and read about their experiences: http://moriahtourband.wordpress.com/
Year 10 IST (Israel Study Tour) students also attended the event in Jerusalem, further demonstrating to our Israeli Alumni the importance that our homeland plays in the experiential programs offered to our students.
Our IST group is fully immersed in Israeli life – discovering so much about the culture and the country. Last week, the students were invited to experience an Israeli wedding! Click HERE to see how they enjoyed this simcha!
Right now, the group is experiencing life in the Army at Gadna. We encourage everyone to also visit the IST blog and read the students’ amazing accounts of their trip. www.israelstudytour.com.au
