A group of Melbourne students has organised a protest to raise public awareness of the plight of Gilad Shalit who turned 24 yesterday. The IDF soldier is in his fifth year of captivity.

Shalit was captured  by Hamas during a cross-border raid on June 25, 2006. He has been held prisoner in the Gaza strip ever since and repeated requests by the International Red Cross to visit him have been denied on the basis that Hamas do not want his whereabouts revealed.

The Melbourne students will meet at the GPO in Bourke St tomorrow [Monday] to hold a peaceful rally and are encouraging the community to join them.
