Meet Matt Levett – guest of the Federal Police
Matt Levett visited Australia last year as a guest of the Australian/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council…he renewed his acquaintance ship with AIJAC this week on a visit to Australia at the behest of the Australian Federal Police.
AIJAC Executive Director Colin Rubinstein told a breakfast meeting in Sydney that Levett had been involved with the FBI in the United States for whom he did strategic analysis particularly focusing on the funding of terrorist organisations. Levett has also written a definitive book on Hamas andf is currently completing one on Hezbollah and its global network.
Also attending the breakfast meeting was Israeli General Yaacov Amidror.
Levett said that he had been visiting the AFP as a consultant in the finance of terrorism. Both Amidror and Levett are associated with the Washington Institute where Amidror is a visiting senior Fellow.
Levett said the Washington Institute does much work in the prevention of nuclear weapons falling into Iranian hands. He said that one could assume Iran would use nuclear weapons…or make them available to terrorist groups. He said that even if it were just a likelihood living with likelihood in Israel “could not be all that comfortable”. Levett believes that Israel faces only two existential threats…one from demographics and the other from an Iranian nuclear weapon.” The less obvious side of the question is how we need to appreciate just how aggressive Iran is today by the use of proxies to project power well beyond its borders.
According to Levett, as much as other countries are looking to reduce their activities in Afghanistan, Iran is stepping up theirs. General Amidror said that the Iranian presence was everywhere in the Middle East and that the Iranians have an uncanny knack of “smelling weaknesses”. He said that 55% of the world’s energy would be in an area controlled by Iran if they took control of countries like Saudi Arabia. General Amidror added: “We need a very tough American President. It will change the economy and the West will control of this area. Amidror said: “I don’t believe sanctions will stop Iran.” He quoted Senator McCain who said: “There is only one tthing worse than bombing Iran and that is Iran having a bomb”.
