Max Lemberg gets a surprise visit
Fifty years ago Max Lemberg started his teaching career at Sydney’s Moriah College…and last week members of the school’s Student Council visited him to wish him a happy 98th birthday.
Max, now resident at the Montefiore Home in Randwick was still taking prayers at the school at the age of 95.
Max Lemberg started teaching at Moriah in 1966 teaching Hebrew, Tanach, Grammar and Jewish History and was well-known for preparing countless boys for their Bar Mitzvah.
He remained at the College until his official retirement in 1983, at the age of 65 returning to the school to teach part-time and to take prayers.
Student leaders from Moriah visit Max at the Monte as much as possible where gets huge pleasure from watching the Moriah Early Learning Students hold their Kabbalat Shabbat at the Home.
Last Thursday, when the students went to see him for his birthday they were accompanied by Director of Jewish Studies, Ronnen Grauman.
Grauman reports: “Max was very surprised by our visit. He was so pleased we came-he saw us standing by his room and a big smile appeared on his face . We sat in his room, sang happy birthday. He told us the secret to his long life – a good wife and a good mother. The students also loved sharing the day with him.”
From the day he met me at the airport when I first arrived in Sydney with my family nearly 24 years ago, Max Lemberg has been a very special person in my life.
Mazal Tov bis 120 be-geszunt.
I remember Mr Lemberg teaching my brother Bobby, now known as Dr Rob Rosen for his Barmi, many moons ago.
Mr Lemberg looks fantastic!!!!!!!I hope we all look that good if we reach his young age.
Yom hooledet sameach from ERETZ Hakodesh !!!!!
I also remember him giving a recommendation on Mr Link to mr grandfather Dr Mahler, who had been approached by people in Canada for his recommendation on Mr Link for a great job there, and as my grandfather didn’t know him, he asked Mr Lemberg who gave a glowing recommendation which my grandfather forwarded and hence Mr Link got the job. I was told not to repeat it but….. So so so many years have passed, that it doesn’t matter anymore and only reflects highly on Mr Lemberg!!!
Mazal tov again from Caryn Rosen, grandaughter of Dr David Mahler and Harry/Chaim Rosen ,both founders and known from Central Synagogue
