MAOZ Safeguarding Unit to protect Melbourne’s Jewish children
To effectively protect Melbourne’s Jewish community, MAOZ has forged an alliance with the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) in the development of a safeguarding unit.
The JCCV has had a longstanding commitment to child protection and identifies safeguarding the vulnerable as one of its priorities.
MAOZ was formerly known as Tzedek and is an advocacy group for Jewish victims/survivors of child sexual abuse
Never has it been timelier than now to ensure that the Jewish community and its many organisations become and remain compliant with the Victorian Government’s newly introduced changes to the mandatory requirements of the Child Safe Standards and Reportable Conduct Scheme.
The changes, introduced in 2022, strengthen the Child Safe Standards. Whilst a number of Jewish organisations have individually sought professional guidance to assist them in their compliance with the Child Safe Standards, such services come at a significant cost and remain out of reach for many smaller congregations. Lack of accessibility to safeguarding services has left the Victorian Jewish community at risk of ongoing abuse for our community’s most vulnerable members.
MAOZ and the JCCV are jointly committed to being proactive in protecting the community and in keeping it informed. Safeguarding children is of the utmost importance to our community and MAOZ is working to professionally develop resources and training to assist Jewish organisations with compliance and implementation of the new Child Safe Standards.
The MAOZ Safeguarding Unit is now operational.
