Major U.S. medical award for Sydney surgeon

Sydney-based colorectal surgeon, Professor Graham Newstead has been made an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

The award was accompanied by the following citation: “The American College of Surgeons pays tribute to your outstanding achievements in surgery, your international reputation, and your distinguished humanitarian services”.

 Graham Newstead has previously received awards for his colorectal surgical activities in Australia and overseas  relating to Outreach services and Scholarship training programmes and for the introduction and the continuing development of Bowel Cancer Screening Programmes.

In 2005 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine in the field of colorectal surgery, mainly through the development of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australasia, the implementation of international specialist surgical training programmes, and the promotion of health awareness initiatives.

Recently retired from clinical surgical practice, Graham has now taken on the role of Medical Director of Bowel Cancer Australia and continues his responsibilities as Chairman of the International Council of Coloproctology.
