Magen David Adom is not just on the front lines defending Israel against the virus, it is the front line.
MDA was appointed by the Israeli government to lead the fight, not just because it is the best for the job, but because there is no one else who can do it.
The situation in Israel continues to escalate. Nearly 1,700 doctors and nurses are in quarantine, including the head of the health ministry’s central laboratory. This is why Australian Friends of MDA are launching an Emergency Appeal to support MDA’s fight.
MDA is doing everything possible to contain the spread of the virus, care for patients, and protect medical workers. We need your help.
MDA has massively expanded its emergency call centres and is taking up to 90,000 calls a day, a huge increase from its usual 6,000 daily calls.
Right now, specialised ambulances are now being modified to treat coronavirus patients. These ambulances have a complete airtight seal between the driver cabin and the patient cabin, with separate ventilation systems for each. A microphone and window are installed to enable communication.
MDA has unveiled its community medicine initiative, a program that is sending paramedics in full protective suits into patients’ homes with telemedicine equipment to provide doctors with the ability to examine patients remotely while they are in quarantine.
MDA is implementing drive-through testing facilities throughout Israel, and nearly doubling the number of medics able to test patients by training 700 medical students whose schools have been closed due to the pandemic. These brave young people are joining the ranks of those who are saving lives around the clock.
Israel’s health system is so stretched that hospitals alone are not enough. Several Israeli hotels have been converted to medical facilities that are being used to help care for less critical patients. But these facilities are filling, and more hotels are being used. As the patient count rises, the need for facilities and supplies continues to escalate.
The brave men and women of MAGEN DAVID ADOM are doing everything they can, day and night, to meet the tremendous needs of Israel, answering every emergency call, testing every person who needs it, and treating patients. But this pandemic is depleting their supplies.
