Maccabi World Union’s leadership together with the Maccabiah Organising Committee have made the decision to postpone the 21st Maccabiah to the Northern Summer of 2022.

The official dates for the 21st Maccabiah will be 12 -26 July, 2022. Opening ceremony on 14th July and Closing ceremony on 25th July.

The main reason for the decision to postpone the Maccabiah was driven by the Olympic Committee’s determination that the Olympic games be postponed to the Summer Olympics to 2021, which would have been in parallel with the Maccabiah’s original dates. The first Maccabiah took place in 1932 at the Maccabiah Stadium in Tel Aviv and with the exception of World War II was never cancelled and always took place a year after the Olympics. This tradition will be maintained on the basis of Maccabiah running in 2022.

The postponement of the Maccabiah by one year will help the organising committee in Israel and the heads of delegation around the world to recover from the Corona crisis and provide time for the athletes to resume training and prepare for competing in the Jewish Olympics.

The Australian Maccabiah Management Team look forward to building a strong and passionate team to participate in the 21st Maccabiah in July of 2022. Nominations will reopen early next year.

A Maccabi Australia spokesperson said: “Age categories for Junior and Youth are yet to be determined by the Maccabiah Organising Committee, we are awaiting clarification, which will be communicated widely in due course.”
