Maccabi Junior Carnival off to a great start

More than 550 young athletes are competing in the 31st Maccabi Junior Carnival which opened in Sydney last night.

The week long event was opened by Maccabi Australia president Lisa Borowick with former Maccabi World Union president Jean Futeran lighting the flame following an address by NSW Minister for Sport Graham Annesley.

A surprise performance was given by New Zealand-born Carnival Manager Danny Hochberg who stripped down to his shorts to join his fellow Kiwis in a classic Haka.

The carnival, in which 12-16 yr-olds participate, will last for a week and its participants, teams from New Zealand, Queensland, Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales  will take part in sports such as, AFJ, Athletics, Basketball, Beach Games, Futsal, Golf, Lawn Bowls, Mud Running, Netball, Rock Climbimg, Soccer, Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Touch Football, Frisbee and Volleyball.
