Maccabi Australia is set for a big 2019 and has some ambitious plans for the year ahead.

Jeff Sher, Joan Hillman, Lisa Borowick and David Grace

  • The Junior Carnival to be held in Sydney from the 15thto 22nd Around 380 participants are expected to join in the action-packed sports and social activities
  • Pan Am Games– to be held in Mexico from the 5th-15th July – a team of around 120 is going to represent Australia across a variety of sports.
  • Maccabi Life will kick off a number of community events including a Memory Jog Walk event with Dementia Australia and a Health Wellbeing expo
  • The official kick-off for next Maccabiah games 2021 will begin early next year

To deliver on these objectives and to ensure that Maccabi remains focussed on building our clubs and increases participation in sports, a new strategic plan was adopted at the Maccabi Australia AGM held Sunday 25 November. In addition to the plan there were several personnel changes at the Board brought about by the retirement of three long-standing board members who had come to the end of their term including Sydney Kahn, Philip Sheezel and Mikki Silverman.

With these departures, the Board welcomed four new members being Debbie Rutstein,        (NSW)   – as the board member responsible for Member protection and safety, Caryl Hertz,(VIC) as the chair of Maccabi Life, Loren Datt (VIC) as the new Treasurer and Jodi Rosenthal.(NSW) to lead the Sports development portfolio.

Each of these new board members has a wealth of experience and they will add strength to the board and whilst not planned the new board has a gender balance which will enrich the perspective of the organisation.  The calibre of the people who make up the Maccabi Australia Board is second to none, and Sher noted that Maccabi Australia is now well positioned to deliver the strategic plans as a result

In addition to the appointment of new Board Members, 4 esteemed and significant contributors to the Maccabi Organisation were awarded life Membership – the recipients are:

  1. David Grace QC – VIC
  2. Joan Hillman – WA
  3. Dr Marc Adonis  – WA
  4. Lisa Borowick – VIC

To be awarded Life Membership one must have made a significant contribution to Maccabi Australia over a period of no less than 15 years. Each of these appointees has given far more than that, and each continues to provide value to the organisation.

Jeff Sher continues in his role as President, the rest of the board members and their portfolios are listed below:

Barry Smorgon – Chairman and Head of Delegation to Maccabiah 2020

Tom Goldman – Chair of the Board of Governors

Julian Dunne – Marketing and Brand Development

Jodi Rosenthal  – Sport Development

David Cohen – Leadership Development

Caryl Hertz – Chair Maccabi Life
