Maccabi and Bialik swim school
Maccabi Victoria has launched Maccabi Aquatics – a full service swim school – to commence operating in Term 4, 2021.
Maccabi Aquatics will offer a full range of programs including Learn-to-Swim; Junior, Senior & Masters Squads; Water Aerobics; Fitness Squads; and All Abilities classes.
Maccabi Aquatics, a community partnership between Bialik College and Maccabi Victoria, will start as a full-service swim school based at the Gringlas Sport Centre.
Funded by a unique “social bond’ agreement this social enterprise will provide a constant revenue stream for both organisations well into the future.
Swimming was one of only four sports offered in our first Maccabi Interstate Carnival in 1925, which was established with the aim of connecting our Jewish community through sport.
Surrounded by beaches and swimming pools, learning to swim has always been an important milestone in a child’s life in Australian culture and we are excited and Maccabi PROUD that we can now offer our community a cutting edge, full aquatics program, at a state of the art facility – and continue to connect our community – through aquatics – 96 years on.
Maccabi plays an important role in our community. Every week almost 5,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers compete amongst the wider community. They do so as Jews, athletes, teammates and friends.
Our Maccabi Aquatics program will not only provide the opportunity for future generations to learn how to swim, but it will also provide a pathway to a more advanced swimming program, including training squads and competition through the revival of the Maccabi Swimming Club, our new home for Jewish Swimming.
The Maccabi Aquatics program has been tailored to suit all age groups and abilities, from our “learn to swim” school, through to Water Aerobics and other similar aquatic activities.
Maccabi Aquatics at Bialik puts Jewish swimming back on the map and establishes a new Maccabi home for Jewish aquatics.
Maccabi Aquatics has been established with the generous support of the Maccabi Victoria Sports Foundation, as part of a long-term partnership between Maccabi and Bialik and will operate solely for the benefit of the community. Maccabi will run the swim school, which will be based at the Bialik College Gringlas Sports Centre Pool. Over time, all surplus funds earned by Maccabi Aquatics will flow back into the community via Maccabi and the Bialik Foundation.
Maccabi Aquatics will offer pathways for competitive swimming under the banner of the existing Maccabi Ajax Swimming Club which was one of the state’s premier clubs in the 1970s & ’80s. By creating a home for Jewish Swimming at Bialik and an established competitive pathway, our aim is to reinvigorate Jewish swimming in Melbourne to ensure a vibrant, growing and successful Maccabi Swimming Club into the future. Maccabi Aquatics will also work closely with Bialik and its sports department in running curriculum swimming, school swim squads and fitness, health & wellbeing aquatic programs at the College.
