With a history of antisemitic outbursts in his wake, Australian movie star Mel Gibson has embarked on a new project…co-writing a movie on the life of Jewish historical hero Judah Maccabee.

According to “Variety”, Gibson will co-write the screenplay with well-known screenwriter Joe Eszterhas.

Gibson, whose Icon company will produce the movie, also has first option to direct it.

Judah Maccabee recaptured Judea from the Greeks and Syrians in 165 BCE. The story of the oil burning for eight days in the temple in Jerusalem is the basis for the festival of Chanukah.

Maccabee strongly disapproved of sport and competition yet almost the entire Jewish world plays its games and sport within an organisation bearing his name.
