Look who’s coming to the sukkah
Some Sydney progressive Jews aligned with progressive or reform Judaism invited their rabbi to their sukkah.
Debbie Scholem told J-Wire: “Progressive Jews enjoy performing this most delightful of mitzvot in building a sukkah.
The Festival of Succot has to be the most hands on and enjoyable of all the festivals. Erecting a succah is a family affair – those under ten take care of the decorations and those over 70 can provide the refreshments.
Then all week you get to hang out and eat in a sacred space (weather permitting) with fellow Jews and hopefully an assortment of non-Jews too. Our family has built a succah each year for over 30 years. Apart from it being the closest thing we ever get to camping it is something we look forward to every year. This year we invited our shule’s Rabbi Nicole Roberts and her husband David plus an assortment of family and friends for a Succot Sunday lunch.”
