Each Monday, more than 20 members of Club 50, a social support group for Holocaust survivors and friends, meet at JewishCare’s Drop-In Centre at Fischl House in Woollahra.

Stopping only occasionally for a cup of tea, the women knit and chat producing  socks for Rene Glass’s broader community  project “Slippers with Soul”, whose target is to provide a million pairs of socks for the elderly in nursing homes, hospitals and hostels across the nation.

A spokesman for JewishCare told J-Wire: “We get contributions of wool, stuffing, knitting needles from some members while others deliver the finished goods to the organisations which distribute them to those in need. It is an ongoing project. The group has been knitting together since October 2007 and has produced knitted stuff dolls as promotional items for Diabetic Research and booties, bonnets and blankets for premature babies in hospitals.”

Slippers With Soul is a national project established in May last year and supported by Sydney Care.
