Kick for a Cause
The annual Over 30s Kick for a Cause AFL charity footy match was played on a sunny Queen’s Birthday long weekend at East Caulfield Reserve where 40 friends got together to help raise money for Jewish Care Victoria and Melbourne Jewish Charity Fund (MJCF).
It was a closely contested and physical match with Jewish Care getting the early lead on MJCF. However, a 7 goal last quarter by MJCF saw them fight back valiantly but still fall short to see Jewish Care win by 17 points.
Organised by Reuben Zelwer, Dion Epstein and Joel Fixler, the event is now in its 4th year of supporting the two community organisations. This year the players raised over $6000 from friends and families who sponsored them. The money will be shared equally between the charities.
“There were plenty of highlights in the game and the skill level and intensity was impressive as the veterans turned back the clock. More importantly though, the game was played in great spirits and it was great to have the involvement of players, spectators and volunteers alike to raise funds and awareness of these two important charities,” said Reuben Zelwer.
Entertainment included a sausage sizzle and a visit from Jewish Care’s mascot, Tzeddy, who delighted the younger supporters by handing out much sought after AFL footy cards which kept the kids busy at half time.
“The effort displayed by all the players each year is magnificent. It has become a great family day on the community calendar and the money raised each year is certainly appreciated by both organisations,” said Bill Appleby, Jewish Care CEO.
The final score was Jewish Care 12.13.85 def MJCF 10.8.68.
