Jul-30 webinar: Shtisel stars to highlight evolving Haredi community
Shtisel actress Neta Riskin (Giti Weiss) will join Shtisel co-creator Yehonatan Indursky and Jerusalem-based Haredi feminist activist Pnina Pfeuffer for an enlightening webinar on Israel’s complex and evolving Haredi community.
The NIF Australia webinar will be on July 30 at 8:30 pm.
The discussion will delve into the captivating world created by Indursky and Riskin, alongside the real-life challenges faced by Pfeuffer as she broadens the scope of Haredi politics to define a new discourse that spans beyond social and economic challenges to include feminism, equality, and justice.
“Not only will this webinar allow people to get an inside perspective on creating and making the award-winning show, it will also bring to light how Haredim today are challenging their community norms to make meaningful change,” said NIF Australia executive director Liam Getreu.
“Most Australians will not have heard of the groundbreaking work of Haredi feminist activist Pnina Pfeuffer and the New Haredim organisation that she leads and we are thrilled to host her alongside one of Shtisel’s leading stars Neta Riskin, as well as co-creator Yehonatan Indursky,” added Getreu.
The rapidly growing Ultra-Orthodox community in Israel today comprises 12% of the population and is the focus of Netflix drama Shtisel, which has captivated viewers across the world. It portrays a vibrant world where Haredi protagonists are fully formed and fleshed-out characters who live out and contend with their most human desires in the Yiddish-tinged vernacular of contemporary Jerusalem.
While Israel’s right-wing establishment has actively and deliberately courted Haredim, progressive Israelis are now working to create new partnerships with these communities. For any true path to partnership to be possible, something must transpire in Israel: to begin to view Haredim with all of the human complexity and inspiring multiplicity of any diverse community.
