Gold Medal judges Antonio Aguilera and Larry Cornofsky
Cornofsky explained that in competition hockey there are two on field umpires and two judges, one responsible for time-keeping and the other for the electronic score sheet.
J-Wire had the questions…Larry Cornofsky had the answers.
Whereabouts in Sydney do you live? St Ives, since 2007 – previously Wahroonga from 1997 to 2007
Profession? Chartered Accountant – work at Prestige Auto Traders Australia, Rozelle
Did you play hockey yourself? Yes
If so, to what level? I played in South Africa – Western Province Schools (Provincial representative team); Provincial U-21; Senior provincial for Griqualand West (Kimberley area) whilst serving in the army. South Africa Maccabi 1981 – Silver medallists at 11th Maccabiah. Played club level for Gordon from 1997 to 2002 on arrival in Australia.
How did you get involved in the Olympics? I was living in Los Angeles (1988-1996) and volunteered for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. The Hockey Results Manager passed away just prior to the Test Event in 1995 and I was employed as the Results Manager, commuting between LA and Atlanta for 4 days every month from Jan 96 – May 96 at which point I moved to Atlanta for 3 months before and during the Games.
Will you be involved in Rio if asked to? Yes, as long as my wife is still supportive. I am still involved in International Hockey Federation (FIH) events as a supplier of tournament administration software including World Cup; Champions Trophy, Champions Challenge and World Hockey league so will be quite busy with this. I am also on the ORIS (Olympic Results and Information Services) project which sets the scope/standards for the hockey results system at the Olympic Games. There is an ORIS project for each sport at the Games and I have been involved with this project since its inception in 1996.
Do any members of your family play hockey? Not yet – my children are 9 and 7 and I will encourage them when they are old enough (in my opinion).
Do you play other sports? No longer, but at school played cricket, soccer, table tennis and hockey; and cricket and hockey after school.
52-yr-old Cornofsky is originally from Capetown. He lives in Sydney with his wife Shelley and sons Daniel 9, and Jonathan 7.
The final was won Germany who defeated the Netherlands 2-1.
Cornofsky told J-Wire: “I did come home with a medal. Judges and umpires received one along with a certificate as a gesture of our participation.
