Jewish House to offer more affordable rental units in Sydney’s east for people doing it tough
Sydney’s Jewish House has today announced the expansion of their crisis accommodation properties with the opening of eight self-contained, affordable units available for long-term rent to people in need, and an additional eight short-term rapid rehousing rooms for people in immediate crisis.
Thanks to The Goodridge Foundation, a long-time supporter of Jewish House’s crisis work in the community, the charity has access to a property located in the Sydney Eastern Suburb of Paddington. This new property, comprising of eight self-contained apartments, will provide long-term, low-rent, affordable housing to people who are struggling with the skyrocketing rental costs in Sydney.
Jewish House CEO, Rabbi Mendel Kastel today said, “We are grateful to everyone at The Goodridge Foundation who have helped us make this expansion possible. This month we will be opening the doors to eight clean, tidy, safe, and self-contained units (each with their own bathroom and kitchenette). The units will provide housing to couples, single parents and their children, and seniors in our community. The expansion of our accommodation properties is a direct response to the growing need for more affordable housing in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.
We would like to reach out to the community and offer expressions of interest from new rental tenants for these affordable units.
The opening of the rental apartments is just one part of a recent expansion of Jewish House’s crisis accommodation services this month. The charity will also open a second property in October, with an additional eight rooms providing rapid-rehousing and a safe sanctuary to homeless men, women, children, and families in need of immediate accommodation, and fast access to social workers and counselling services.
Rabbi Kastel said: “I am very relieved to be able to expand our crisis accommodation rooms this month, increasing our ability to house hundreds of more people in an immediate state of homelessness over the coming year. At Jewish House, we see firsthand the impact our accommodation services have on the lives of children and adults in crisis. We are so pleased to be able to provide more warm, safe, clean accommodation to help these people in times of desperate need”.
