Jewish comedy showcase stellar line-up
Shalom will be hosting its seventh Jewish Comedy Showcase as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival on Monday, April 29.
The hilarious Rachel Berger is returning as headliner, with the charismatic David Smiedtat his brilliant best as MC. Alice Fraser and Michael Shafar– acclaimed comedians doing ground-breaking comedy around the country, are gracing the stage, along with the delightfully funny Victoria Zerbst and witty Jacob Sacher, who’s taking the Melbourne comedy scene by storm!
Hailed by The Australianas “Queen of stand-up satire and dominatrix extraordinaire of audiences”, Rachel Berger is one of Australia’s most highly regarded comedic talents. She has worked as a comedian, broadcaster, novelist, columnist, agitator and television entertainer for 30 years. In that time she’s taken four solo shows to the Edinburgh Festival and her dynamic presence and engagingly sharp observations have made her an extremely popular performer both live and on television, across Australia and overseas.
David Smiedt has been delighting audiences around the country and overseas with his brand of warm, inclusive, uplifting, intelligent comedy. A regular on television shows, David is the author of seven humorous books and writes for a wide range of over 30 magazines including Elle, Home Beautiful, Cleo, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Body & Soul, Sunday Style and Vogue where he specialises in a humorous take on style health trends and celebrity profiles.
In 2017, David was diagnosed with cancer. He turned the experience into a sell-out show around Australian Comedy Festivals entitled Finding Chemo and wrote about it for GQ magazine. Having appeared at The Sydney Writer’s Festival and Vivid Ideas, he is now establishing the first bedside comedy club for cancer patients at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse hospital in Sydney.
Deb Meyer, Program Manager at Shalom, who has been producing the Jewish Comedy Showcase since 2017 has said that “this year’s showcase is one of the best line-ups we’ve had. It is always a pleasure to explore the minds and talents of the people who make us laugh day in and day out. Comedy has always been part of the Jewish narrative and is an important element of our annual offerings”
