Jewish Aid at the Plenum
The Sydney Jewish community will get an insight into the work of Jewish Aid Australia next week when CEO Gary Samowitz addresses the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies plenum.
Formerly the Hillel director at The Shalom Institute in Sydney, Melbourne-based Samowitz is passionate about social change and experiential learning.
Jewish Aid Australia, which has an active presence in Sydney, “focuses on mobilising the Australian Jewish community to become active in pursuing social justice causes in the wider community”, Samowitz said.
Its numerous programs include working with Sudanese refugee youth and Indigenous youth.
Samowitz has been a madrich on 12 Israel programs, was an active leader of Habonim Dror in South Africa and Australia and as Hillel director ran a range of leadership courses. He was the recipient of an Australian Leadership Award from the Australian Davos Connection in 2012, has degrees in Jewish history and Middle East politics, and represented Australia in rugby at the Maccabiah Games in Israel.
The Board of Deputies meeting will be held in the Sydney Jewish Museum on Tuesday July 15 at 7.30pm. Inquiries: 9360 1600.
