JCCV commends bravery of boys facing a knife in bus
A man brandishing a knife confronted a group of Jewish students from Melbourne’s Leibler Yavneh College while they were aboard a public bus.
While on the same bus as the students, the man started making hateful antisemitic remarks, identifying himself as a Nazi. Alarming everyone on the bus, he then extracted a sizable knife from his bag and began menacing the students.
The students raised their voices, alerting the bus driver, who promptly allowed them to disembark. The man briefly trailed the students before eventually distancing himself from them.
Fortunately, the students managed to re-enter the bus without any additional trouble.
President of The Jewish Community Council of Victoria, Daniel Aghion, told J-Wire: “It is of grave concern that a group of Jewish students were allegedly vilified and threatened on a public bus last week. I would like to commend the Leibler Yavneh College students involved on their courage and bravery in moving themselves out of harm’s way and reporting the incident to CSG.
“CSG has been working closely with school leadership to ensure the students involved receive the support they require. Parents have also been provided with important guidance to help them speak with their children about personal safety. The JCCV thanks CSG for its diligent and professional approach to addressing this alarming incident.”
“The JCCV will continue to work hard to combat antisemitism against Jewish Victorians. I would urge the Victorian Government to fast-track its work on strengthening anti-vilification laws in our state so that antisemites are held responsible for their odious actions.”
