James Valentine in fashion @ the SJM
ABC radio personality James Valentine recently moderated a panel at the Sydney Jewish Museum on “Does the Media Fashion Fashion”.
An audience of over 70 heard the panel comprised of Cleo editor Sharri Markson, ZaneRobe general manager Kirsty Kingswell, Professor of Design History UTS Peter McNeil and clinical psychologist, Renee Symonds discuss the topic
At the crux of the discussion was the current and emerging technology enabling people to gain instant shopping gratification and exposure to a host of fashion influences. What was evident from the discussion was the shift of influential power to sell fashion from traditional fashion magazines to the faster cycle of internet based media. Renee’s observations delved into what actually drives us to dress in certain ways and where our desires come from, acknowledging mediums such as blogs or magazines only have power, if we, the consumer, give them power. Proving the question was clothed in complexity, James said “it is the chicken or the dress syndrome”.
The Sydney Jewish Museum is currently running an exhibition on the clothing trade in Sydney.
