Israeli woman killed in NZ car accident

A 61-yr-old Israeli woman has been killed in a motoring accident on the Te Anau- Milford Sound Highway, south of  Knobbs Flat.

It was a single vehicle crash where a Toyota Corolla rental vehicle heading north to Milford Sound left the road and collided with a tree.

There was extensive damage to the front right corner of the vehicle.

The rear seat passenger, a 61 year old Israeli woman died at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle and another passenger were transported to Invercargill Hospital for treatment by helicopter and ambulance. Their injuries have not yet been confirmed.

The crash was attended to by Te Anau Police, one Fire Brigade Appliance and staff from Downers EDI Works. Traffic was reduced to one lane while the scene was attended to.

The weather at the time was fine and clear.

The vehicle will be uplifted and transported to Invercargill later today. A full investigation into the crash and its cause has commenced.

The woman is yet to be named.

A police spokesman told J-Wire that the road on which the accident occurred is a notorious blackspots adding: “As you can well understand, we get a lot of tourists in this part of the world driving on a road where great care is necessary.”
