An Israeli woman has been charged following a car crash near Mossburn, New Zealand in which two English tourists were killed.

27-year-old Yelena Aminov has been charged with careless driving causing death. She and  a male passenger, also Israeli, were on the tourist route between Queenstown and Milford Sound when their rental car was involved in a crash with another rental car in which two English tourists from Manchester were travelling.

A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Canberra told J-Wire that they were aware of the accident and were providing consular assistance. He said: “Police are continuing their investigation.”

Media reports state that the impact of the crash left part of the English couple’s Nissan Sunny embedded in the Israelis’ Ford Focus. Both cars had been rented from the same company.

The Israeli couple were taken to hospital but were not seriously injured.
