Israel calls South Africa’s International Court of Justice complaint ‘cynical’
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement condemning the government of South Africa for filing human rights abuse charges against the State of Israel with the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“South Africa has once again failed in its cynical attempts to use the International Court of Justice to limit Israel’s fundamental right and duty to protect its citizens from the ongoing Hamas attacks and to release the hostages held in brutal captivity in Gaza,” said the ministry.
The ministry stressed that Israel acts in accordance with international law, including with regard to its commitment to allow and facilitate the transfer of essential humanitarian aid intended for the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
“Israel does not impose limits on the amount of essential humanitarian aid that enters the Gaza Strip, in particular on food, water, shelter equipment and medicine,” it said adding that the country “is not interested in harming the civilian population.”
The ministry further pledged that Israel will continue to promote new initiatives, and to” expand existing initiatives, in order to enable and facilitate the flow of aid to the Gaza Strip in a continuous and extensive manner, by land, air and sea, together with UN bodies and other partners in the international community.”
In its statement, the ministry also explained that Israel’s continues its efforts to increase the scope and ways of accessing aid despite the challenges the operatives in the field and the “abominable attempts of Hamas to hoard, steal and take over aid.”
It also placed the blame for any humanitarian crisis in Gaza squarely on the shoulders of the Hamas terrorist organization adding that Hamas terrorists continue to attack Israeli citizens today and use the civilian population in Gaza as human shields.
“Hamas shows complete contempt for international law and the lives of civilians, both Israelis and Palestinians, and deliberately harms the humanitarian efforts aimed at helping the population of Gaza,” it said.
