Is this a problem for Allegra?
Wentworth independent Allegra Spender says she supports Israel.
She said: “I have opposed the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement and the recent boycott of the Sydney Festival repeatedly since I announced my candidacy. Australia and Israel have very strong ties and I hope to see them strengthened.
I’m working hard to represent everyone in our community, of which the Jewish community is an invaluable and significant part. Since I launched my campaign, I have met with the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, the Australian Jewish Association, the Community Security Group CSG, the National Council of Jewish Women, Rabbi Dovid Slavin, and many other Rabbis privately, as well as many other members of the Jewish community.
I ask you to look at my strong record supporting Israel and opposing the BDS movement.”
But sitting Liberal MP Dave Sharma told J-Wire: “As Australian Ambassador to Israel and now member for Wentworth, I have staunchly opposed the BDS movement in all its manifestations, and stood up for Israel’s right to exist.
Given the prominent role being played by GetUp! and other similar actors in my opponent’s campaign, I believe she must demonstrate clearly her own position on this issue.”
This follows the revelation that Blair Palese who is one of the core Independents who is backing Allegra Spender has posted comments on social media criticising Australia’s support for Israel citing the country’s killing of unarmed children and civilians.
Allegra Spender has clearly stated her position but it appears some of her supporters do not agree with her.
