Irena is going to be missed
JNF mourns the passing of Irena Nebenzahl who passed away recently in Sydney.
Irena who lived in Darling Point was a long-standing Blue Box collector in the Bellevue Hill area.
‘She never said no and was always willing to do anything that was requested of her. Irena has been collecting for as long as I can remember.’ said Salome Woods, JNF Blue Box manager.
As Irena’s health started deteriorating and she was no longer able to physically collect blue boxes, she collected her donations on the telephone. She knew her donors well and they knew her.
Irena loved the JNF and Israel and always supported our cause. She loved to travel, heading somewhere exciting each year.
In years gone by, Irena Nebenzahl was a shining leader in Sydney’s society.
Entertainer Sandy Gutman aka Austen Tayshus, said: “She was my late mother’s first cousin. I have grown very fond of her over my lifetime. A beautiful sense of humour, combined with a fairly provocative intelligence made our time with each other easy and warm.
She was the closest family member I have in terms of sympatico.
She came to many of my shows and was always encouraging and supportive – always sat in the front row and laughed hard for the 90 minutes,
I will miss her – she was more of a close friend rather than a relative. Her final years were spent on her own romantically and I felt she was quite lonely.
I love you, Irena. Long life to all her family.”
J-Wire understand Irena Nebenzahl died at the age of 87.
Irena is survived by her three daughters, Serena, Melanie and Fiona and their families.
Irena’s funeral took place on Monday 5th July 2021.
