Deanna Blacher was awarded an OAM in today’s Queen’s Birthday list…but her skills with the castanets have been acknowledged by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra.

Deanna Blacher

She is founder and director of the Perth-based Danza Viva Spanish Dance Company, is a noted Spanish dancer and choreographer – and one of the world’s very few virtuosas of the castanets. Her astonishing abilities prompted Zubin Mehta to invite Deanna to become the first ever castanets soloist to appear with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. She has worked internationally with chamber and symphony orchestras.

Founder of the W.A.-based Spanish Dance Institute, Inc, Deanna Blacher has devised a graded Spanish dance examination system which is taught in Australia, Singapore and Israel.
