Recently, the Year 5 cohort at Perth’s Carmel School has been learning about child refugees today and those displaced from overseas.

Supporting this and the idea of being an upstander, not a bystander, the students received a special visit from Jill and Eli Rabinowitz and Tamar Pachter, presenting the ‘In My Pocket’ workshop by the WE ARE HERE! Foundation.

Jill read the “In My Pocket” book written by Dorrith Oppenheim Sim to students, a true story set in 1939, sharing Dorrith’s story as she escapes Germany to begin a new life in another country. After hearing the story, the children expressed their creativity by painting sentimental items onto their own pockets inspired by the book.
The students eagerly reflected on their artwork, putting their thoughts on paper to explain the motivation behind their creations.
They shared their reflections with their teachers and peers.
This program is supported and funded by the German Embassy in Canberra.
